New Mexico lawmakers are now mulling a ban against registered sex offenders on Facebook and other social networking sites, while states, like Texas, are considering forcing them to identify their crimes in their profiles.
The Texas bill would reportedly force certain sex offenders to embed in their profile the type of their offence, the location where it occurred, their full name, date of birth, sex, race, height, weight, and eye and hair color. Full Article
And we’re not supposed to believe that registration is punitive??? Is it me, or is that Texas idea just completely insane and setting up people to be persecuted more than they already are?
Yes, lets ban them from living in this virtual neighborhood also…we don’t want their kind around us good folk! I mean, sure…they have already paid their debt to society AND have to register with the police for life but I just don’t think that’s enough.
PLEASE – of course it is cruel and most certainly unusual PUNISHMENT!
This is equal to a scarlet letter, the cyber world version of wearing “I am a sex offender” t-shirt. Like the pink license plate or the “No Candy” sign on the door on Halloween. Next we will need all RSOs to get an gaint tattoo on their foreheads, that or they start cutting limbs off. Also, how is it these laws pass interstate commerce issues at the federal level? Every company of note uses FB for marketing and sales, even more so for start ups. So RSOs can’t use the modern days version of the yellow pages?
Millions of dollars…millions of dollars…they are creating a
JACKPOT…state government sponsored discrimination …
public funded discrimination …….millions of dollars …millions of dollars.
Neither of these make any sense… In, 2008 under pressure from a “task force” of 49 states attorneys general, Facebook and MySpace purged their systems in alliance with a company (I can’t remember the name) that operated a service that scraped the various states Megans Law web sites, providing that information to facilitate the purge. I was one of the purged. All efforts to have my account re-instated have been met with a statement that I was in violation of their (Facebook) terms of service. I do know that there are individuals known to me who are registered and currently hold active accounts on Facebook. I can only surmise the connection between Facebook and the data company is only in sporadic service.
